Each year the elementary Building Improvement Team (BIT), which consists of teachers representing all grade levels and subject areas, meets to determine the areas which should be a specific focus for our time and efforts. The purpose of the group and its members is to:
- Represent a voice of the staff regarding our ongoing improvement efforts.
- Set measurable student achievement goals and monitor progress.
- Hold the BIT team, staff, and grade level teams accountable for actions steps towards school goals.
- Recognize and celebrate goals attained.
The elementary Building Improvement Team has concluded the process of looking at our fall data and setting building wide goals based on that data. The purpose of the team was to indentify goals that met the following criteria. The goals should be:
- Measurable
- Annual: reflecting an increase over the previous year of the percentage of students achieving mastery in a subject area.
- Focused, with occasional exceptions, on student achievement
- Linked to a year-end assessment
- Written in simple, direct language that can be understood by almost any audience.
The BIT team identified three goal areas and have set specific goals focusing on results to demonstrate success. The three areas include:
- Dictation
- Reading Comprehension (PK-2)
- Reading Comprehension (3-6): _____Results (3rd & 4th Grade) / (5th & 6th Grade)
- 6+1 Traits of Writing
At the end of the school year, the Building Improvement team, along with the entire staff, will assess whether the goals were met. If goals are met, our staff will continue to utilize those strategies to improve student achievement. If goals are not met, we use that analysis and information to learn more about what did not work and then refine our goals or our practices to make improvements in those areas.
Please review our building level goals. Family and community support is a necessary component needed to achieve them. Please ask questions of teachers or administrators for clarification or if you would like ideas to help support the students. The goals reflect our staff’s dedication to improving our practice and providing the best learning opportunities for each and every student at Earlham Community Schools. Community and family input and feedback are always welcome.
